The first company dance performed to Ritmo Masacote's music, this music and dance was created in honor of Take Five, the 5/4 couple choreography which made Ana & Joel famous. In it, the company probes deep into musical timing and structure. The work is characterized by numerous quick group transitions, sharp lines and movements, and salsa contrasts danced in 5/4 and 4/4 timing.
When creating 5 Beat Mambo, Ana and Joel Masacote were embarking on new territory, leading the first Salsa company to perform to music created by them and for them. In light of this, the work was set against a backdrop of non-traditional vs traditional standards:
- Futuristic yet contemporary costuming design
- Salsa on 5/4 vs 4/4 timing, and
- Quick formation changes and non-conventional dance choreography with slight elements reminiscent of the classic Take Five.
